Last weekend, the Parker Boys Volleyball team competed in the West Coast Challenge at Christian high school, taking 2nd place in the Gold Division. Friday afternoon began with pool play, during which the Lancers went 3-0, earning victories over Fallbrook, Canyon Crest, and Patrick Henry.
Against Fallbrook, senior outside hitter David Barrett and junior middle blocker Bijan Sagart each had 7 kills, with Bijan adding 6 aces from the service line. Senior JT Melbourn stepped in as Libero with 4 digs.
Barrett and Sagart once again led the Lancers offensively against Canyon Crest, with 9 and 7 kills respectively. Sagart would post his highest hitting average of the tournament, hitting .667 against the Ravens. Juniors Adam Nussbaum and Nick Gustafson each picked up 8 digs while sophomore Spencer Thoene had 3 aces and 13 digs of his own.
The Lancers closed out against their pool by sweeping Patrick Henry. Barrett had 10 kills to lead the Lancers for the 3rd straight game. Freshman Matthew Fromm came in and got 5 kills and 5 digs. Thoene added 6 digs of his own.
The team started day two with a thrilling match against Point Loma, where they ultimately fell in the deciding 3rd game. Gustafson and Barrett led the Lancers offensively with 10 and 8 kills apiece. Senior Chris Fromm and Sophomore Ben Sheres were stalwarts in the middle, as they each picked up 4 blocks. Thoene help the Lancers stay in the match until the very end, recording 3 service aces to go along with his 7 digs
After sweeping Clairemont, the Lancers advanced to the Gold Division Semifinals, where they took on Torrey Pines. Nick Gustafson was the kill leader with 9 as he hit his highest average of the tournament, .439. Bijan Sagard added 8 Kills, while Chris Fromm had 7 to go along with his 2 blocks.
Their victory over the Falcons put the team into the Championship game, where they fell short against Point Loma. Spencer Thoene had 7 digs defensively, while Adam Nussbaum delivered 13 assists. Senior David Barrett and junior Nick Gustafson were both named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lancers return to Western League play this week, starting with an away game against Cathedral at 5:15 on Tuesday, 4/24. Thursday night, they will face off against Point Loma for the fourth time this season, starting at 5:15 in the Parker field house.by Matt Morrison
