After splitting two non-league games earlier in the week, the Parker Boys Volleyball team hit the road, travelling to Newport Beach on Friday afternoon, where they competed in the Orange County Championship Tournament.
Despite dropping their first two games in pool play to perenial powers Lakewood and Corona Del Mar, the Lancers rebounded and went on to earn the Championship trophy of the silver division.
On Saturday, the team came to the gym hungry for victory. They began the day by closing out pool play with a win over Fountain Valley, Nick Gustafson lead the team offensively with 6 kills, as the Lancers earned a bye into the semifinals of the silver division.
In their semifinal match against Woodbridge High School, Junior Setter Adam Nusbaum triggered the offense, spreading out 28 assists. Senior Chris Fromm recorded 11 kills, while Gustafson had another strong performance with 8 kills of his own. Junior Spencer Thoene was everywhere defensively, picking up 6 digs.
The championship game put the Lancers into a rematch with Fountain Valley, but a balanced team effort allowed them to repeat their result from earlier in the day. Fromm, Gustafson, and senior David Barrett combined for 22 kills in the match, and did so while only recording a total of 3 hitting errors, making the Lancer attack nearly impossible to stop. Thoene was able to repeat his defensive performance, playing like a seasoned Libero, and picking up 7 digs despite it only being his 7th match playing the new position.
The Lancers will be back in action twice next week, as they open Western League play. They will hostScripps Ranch at 5:45pm on Tuesday 3/20, and then will travel to Point Loma High School for a 5:15 match on Friday, 3/23.by Matt Morrison
