Sophomore pitcher Katie Austin threw the first no-hitter of her career on Monday, as the Lancers earned their third victory of the season, defeating league rival Santa Fe Christian by a final score of 6-2.
Head Coach Dan Egan had high praise for his starting pitcher after the game, stating "Katie has been a model of consistency for us all year. She has good command of several pitches, and is always around the strike zone. She is also an excellent fielder, one of the best fielding pitchers that I've ever been around in either baseball or softball."
The Lancers got off to a hot start offensively, scoring runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles were able to tie the game in the fifth when they plated two runs of their own, with both players reaching base and scoring on fielding errors.
The Lancers rebounded immediately, exploding for 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 6-2, and Austin did not allow another base runner for the remainder of the game.
It was a balanced attack for the Lancers offensively, as Keara Jenkins, Niki Kim, Gabby Martin, and Danya Perkett each had multiple hits on the day, with Perkett leading the way, going 3-4 and driving in two runs.
The Lancers are back in action this afternoon, when they will host Escondido Charter at 4:15pm. On Friday, they travel to Chula Vista High School for a 3:30 game.by Matt Morrison
